Barnes Pro-Am held at BCC

PENN TWP — The 13th annual Dave Barnes Pro-Am tennis tournament took place Sunday afternoon at Butler Country Club.

Barnes, the founder of the BCC tennis program 40 years ago, was on hand for the event. Among the participants in the tourney were 1992 Butler graduate Jody Offstein — who played for Barnes — and current Butler High girls tennis coach and assistant BCC pro Alisa Green.

“They both talked about Dave and what he’s meant to local tennis during a brief ceremony here,” BCC tennis pro Whitney Snyder said. “I appreciate and respect what he did in planting the seed for the tennis program at the club.

“So many relationships got going through this program because of his hard work.”

Barnes was the tennis pro at BCC for the first seven years of the program.

The event itself consisted of eight two-person teams. Courtney Gallagher, a Butler graduate and senior on the Slippery Rock University women’s tennis team, joined forces with Dylan Parda to win the tournament. They were 5-2 in the round-robin format.

Two other teams also finished 5-2, the Gallagher-Parda tandem winning on a tiebreaker.

Katie Moritz, a former assistant BCC pro who played at the University of Connecticut, teamed with Dave Parda to go 5-2, as did the duo of former Allegheny College player Matt Paat and Kristen Petcash.

“Those three teams all went 1-1 against each other, so we had to go to another tiebreaker —who did the best against the fourth-place team — to determine a champion,” Snyder said.

Former Westminster College player Jay Barkley and Jenny Ivory finished fourth at 3-3-1.

BCC assistant pro Trent Goerk and Dick Yoder, Ken Boben and Offstein both finished 3-4. Doug Johnston and Andrew Petcash — two solid BCC members — were 2-4-1 while BCC assistant pros Hayden Moyer and Green were 2-5.

“It was a pretty emotional day ... a nice way to pay tribute to Dave,” Snyder said.
