Fire in Forward Township damages home

FORWARD TWP — A fire charred much of a one-story house around 10:30 a.m. Saturday at 153 George Road.

A woman who lived at the residence and refused to give her name was at home at the time, according to Evans City Fire Chief Steve Bicehouse.

The woman lit a fire in the fireplace in her living room and about 15 minutes later noticed smoke, according to Bicehouse. She called 911.

“We haven't determined (the cause) yet but it looks that it was the fireplace based on the location,” Bicehouse said.

Firefighters put out most of the fire in about 20 minutes using compressed air foam. The living room sustained severe damage, while the rest of the house sustained smoke damage. There were no injuries.

Bicehouse said the woman was unsure if she had homeowner's insurance. The American Red Cross was contacted to provide food and shelter for the woman.

Evans City Volunteer Fire Department, Harmony Fire District, Callery Volunteer Fire Company and Big Knob Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire. Harmony EMS also was on scene.
