SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — Butler senior Marissa DeCola tied for second in the 15-18 age division at the 2011 Maples Christmas Classic girls golf tournament Thursday.

DeCola carded a 78-77—155 in the two-day event, 10 strokes behind champion Sarah Bae of Cary, N.C.

GREENSBURG — Butler’s Will Nesbitt won the Greensburg Christmas Classic tennis tournament last week.Nesbitt received a first-round bye before defeating three opponents — including Pittsburgh area players Jonathan Perkins and Ross Molinaro — to win the event.<B></B>

CLEVELAND — Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward has become the eighth player in NFL history with 1,000 career receptions.Ward caught a shovel pass in the fourth quarter from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and although it lost three yards, it made him the first Pittsburgh receiver to reach the milestone. Ward and Hall of Famer Jerry Rice are the only players with 1,000 receptions and more than one Super Bowl win.After the catch, Ward came to the sideline, was embraced by his teammates and saluted by thousands of Pittsburgh fans.Ward is in his 14th season as a pro — all with Pittsburgh.

SAN DIEGO — San Diege general manager Josh Byrnes made his second bold move in two weeks when he acquired All-Star outfielder Carlos Quentin from the Chicago White Sox for two prospects Saturday.The trade is expected to bolster San Diego's offense, which was dreadful as the Padres finished last in the NL West at 71-91, 23 games behind the Diamondbacks. Quentin has four consecutive 20-homer seasons, including 36 in 2008.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Kings say DeMarcus Cousins has demanded a trade and has been told to stay away from the team.Kings coach Paul Westphal released a statement before Sunday's game against New Orleans, saying when Cousins “continually, aggressively, lets it be known that he is unwilling/unable to embrace traveling in the same direction as his team, it cannot be ignored indefinitely.”

ATLANTA — Record-setting tight end Tony Gonzalez has signed a one-year contract extension with the Atlanta Falcons.He is the first tight end, and 13th player in NFL history, to have over 13,000 yards receiving and holds nearly every NFL mark for the position. He has 95 touchdown catches.
