Selecting some NFL draft picks
The conference championship games have yet to be played, the Super Bowl is still weeks away and there are 234 days before Tim Tebow takes his next meaningful snap — how will ESPN ever fill the roughly 1,170 hours of SportsCenter?
But there’s always other stuff to talk about, like the NFL Draft that is roughly 100 days away.
This is the time of the year that irks me almost as much as slow drivers, weight watcher ads featuring Jennifer Hudson and Jerry Rice (someone please tell him it is pronounced “with” not “wiff.”)
It’s NFL mock draft time.
These early mock drafts are about as useful as a rotary phone.
Still, they are everywhere.
Anyone with an opinion and a bucket of hair gel wants to be the next Mel Kiper.
Quite frankly, mock drafts are about as accurate as state-controlled newspaper.
For, well, just for the heck of it, here are some early notable mock selections and my take on what will probably happen.
• No. 1 Indianapolis. The pick: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford.
Every mock draft has the Colts snagging Luck with the top pick.
In the world of mock drafts, this is about as much of a sure thing as you can get.
Or is it?
There are still way too many variables. What if some team blows the Colts away with a trade offer to slide into the No. 1 slot? What if Peyton Manning shows up next month flinging the ball around like his neck was never fused back together?
• No. 2 St. Louis Rams. The pick: Matt Kalil, OT, USC.
This is also a popular mock pick. The Rams need someone to keep Sam Bradford in the vertical position and there is no way the Rams will select quarterback Robert Griffin — new coach Jeff Fisher reportedly has a budding bromance going with Bradford.
But wait. Here’s what I think will happen: gasp, a trade!
Yes, a trade. With the new CBA keeping rookie price tags down, teams are more likely to move up to snag a player high. Griffin is 1A to Luck’s 1 when it comes to signal callers in this year’s draft and there are lots of teams desperate for one.
The team in the best position to move up is the Browns with the bevy of pick they received from Atlanta last year.
• No. 10 Buffalo Bills. The pick: Courtney Upshaw, LB, Alabama. It doesn’t matter. Whoever the Bills pick at this point, he’ll be a bust.
The Bills are the anti-Midas. Everything they touch turns to mold.
• No. 24 Pittsburgh Steelers. The pick: ?
Every mock draft I’ve seen has the Steelers picking someone different.
That’s either a sign that the Steelers can take the best athlete available, or they have more holes to fill than usual.
At any rate, all of this is likely to change — several times — until April.
