Fire this morning hits Slippery Rock Twp house

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — A clogged chimney is blamed for an early-morning fire in the 100 block of Harmony Road that forced the owner to flee her home wearing only bed clothes, authorities said.

No one was injured but the fire about 1:25 a.m. today caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to the one-story, brick house in Slippery Rock Township, leaving Janet Porter temporarily homeless.

The state police fire marshal’s office was notified and is investigating but the blaze is not considered suspicious, said Albert Taggart, assistant chief for the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company.

“It looks like the chimney that goes up through the middle of the house was pretty well plugged,” Taggart said.

The stuffed up chimney and a wood stove in the basement combined to ignite the fire that apparently had been burning for some time before Porter discovered it.

Moments earlier, she had been sleeping.

“She doesn’t know what got her up,” Taggart, “ but when she did she heard her smoke alarm and her dog was raising a fuss.”

Porter, who lives alone, had no other option but to get out immediately. She rounded up her dog and escaped with nothing else but the clothes on her back, authorities said.

Firefighters found her shivering in the cold and helped her find shelter in the garage. They provided her blankets before they could got into the house and rescue some her clothing for her to wear.

Taggart said the fire was under control in about 30 minutes.

Assisting the Slippery Rock department were firefighters from Harrisville and Unionville.

Porter’s son arrived later and took his mother to his house, where she would be staying, authorities said.
