Joseph T. Bailie III

Joseph T. Bailie III, 68, of Butler passed away Saturday at the VNA Hospice.

He was born Dec. 1, 1947, in New Kensington, the son of the late Joseph T. and Elva Mae (Gillespie) Bailie and his late stepmother, Mary (Rendek) Bailie.

Joe graduated in 1965 from Springdale High School and then from Slippery Rock State College with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in reading education. While at SRU, he was a member of the Sigma Pi fraternity and a member of the basketball team.

Joe was a Mason from Lodge 433, and he belonged to the New Castle Consistory and the American Legion Post 117. He had been a member of the Butler Elks 170 for 46 years, where he had served as the exalted ruler twice and had been a longtime trustee and CP chairman.

Joe taught at the Emily Brittain Elementary School for 20 years and retired in 1998 after teaching at the Northwest Elementary School for 10 years.

Joe enjoyed good food, good friends and good times gambling, even though not always so lucky. He had a tremendous personality. He never talked badly of anyone and would go out of his way to make everyone happy. His loving family and many friends will dearly miss him.

Surviving are his wife, Erma L. (Blum) Bailie of Butler, who he married Feb. 16, 1973; his son, Joseph T. Bailie IV of Butler; his granddaughter, Carly Lee Bailie of Butler; his grandson, Joseph T. Bailie V of Butler; his sister, Janet (Deno) Gelmini of Hagerstown, Md.; his sisters-in-law, Janet Murray of Zelienople, Donna Vargo of Fort Mills, S.C., and Mary Lou (Bud) Benoit of Charlotte, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jason R. Bailie, who died July 10, 2003.

BAILIE — Friends of Joseph T. Bailie III, who died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Young Funeral Home, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler, with Elk Lodge 170 services at 8 p.m.Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
