Super Streak at 51 and counting

Tom Henschel
Cabot's Henschel has still attended each Super Bowl

CABOT — He got through 50 ... might as well go for 60.

That’s how Cabot resident Tom Henschel, 75, views it as he prepares to venture to NRG Stadium in Houston Sunday for his 51st consecutive Super Bowl game.

“That’s what I’ve always told myself,” Henschel said. “If I can make it to 50 straight, why not go for 60? As long as my health cooperates, I have no plans on stopping.”

Henschel is one of three individuals worldwide — Larry Jacobson, 77, of San Francisco and Don Crisman, 79, of Maine the others — to attend every Super Bowl game.

He was hoping the Steelers would join him this time.

“I was praying, actually,” he said. “Now I have to put up with the New England guy (Crisman) squawking about the Patriots all night.

“He can be such a jerk.”

The NFL annually allots two Super Bowl game tickets each to Henschel, Jacobson and Crisman. The seats are all together, though the trio does have to pay for them.

Henschel said he’s either going to wear “an Atlanta Falcons cap and Steelers jersey, or Steelers cap and Falcons jersey. I haven’t figured out which way I’m going to go just yet.”

Henschel takes a different family member with him to the game each year. He’s taking his nephew, 32-year-old Jonathan Wislie, this weekend.

For Super Bowl 50, Henschel and his cohorts received royal treatment from the NFL. Their transportation, lodging and game tickets were all compliments of the league. Their seats were on the 50-yard line and would have cost them $2,500 per ticket.

They also received free tickets to the annual NFL tailgate party.

“We enjoyed that more than the game,” Henschel recalled. “We’re in there for four or five hours before the game, two big bands playing, 75 different bars, 20 different food booths, it was unbelievable.

“I asked the league if they’d be kind enough to send me free tickets to that tailgate party again this year and wouldn’t you know, they sent them.”

But Henschel isn’t crazy about the league’s choice of his seat location in the stadium.

“The tickets cost me $1,100 each and they’re in nose-bleed territory. The seats are terrible,” he said. “That’s a little disappointing. But you hope for a good game. It’s always fun, always an experience.”

Henschel saves his money up annually for the Super Bowl trip, making it “my big vacation of the year.” He has game buttons, pennants or seat cushions from many of the past Super Bowls.

“I have at least some type of souvenir from every one,” he said. He has saved his ticket stubs as well.

This weekend marks his third trip to Houston for the Super Bowl. Henschel was there for the Miami Dolphins’ 24-7 win over Minnesota in 1974 and New England’s 32-29 triumph over Carolina in 2004.

“It’s not one of my favorite Super Bowl towns,” said Henschel, who ranks New Orleans No. 1 in that regard. “There’s not a whole lot to do there.

“I couldn’t get a (motel) room anywhere in the city, so I’ll be looking for a shuttle or bus to get to the game. But I’ll be there.”

Just like he has been for 50 years.
