SRU's Saunders named all-region

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University junior cornerback Anthony Saunders has been named third team Don Hansen Division II All-Super Region One.

Saunders ranked 11th in all of Division II with 17 passes defensed and had three interceptions. He also ranked fourth on The Rock with 62 tackles, including 42 solo stops.

Elks Hoop Shoot winners named

CENTER TWP — Six winners have been named in the 41st annual Butler Elks Hoop Shoot free throw shooting contest held recently at Center Township Elementary School.

Cade Negley sank 23 of 25 free throws to win the boys ages 12-13 category. Alyssa Eyth sank 17 of 25 to win the girls 12-13 category.

Mattix Clement sank 17 of 25 free throws to win boys 10-11, Cordray Negley 12 of 25 to win girls 10-11. C.J. Singleton sank 20 of 25 to win boys 8-9, Dacia Lewandowski 17 of 25 to win girls 8-9.

All winners will compete in the district contest Jan. 26 at Moon High School.

Hockey all-stars named for PIHL

NEVILLE ISLAND — Numerous local hockey players will be participating in the PIHL All-Star Games Feb. 10 at the RMU Island Sports Center.

Butler’s Mike Guentner and Seneca Valley’s Anthony Raco will coach in the Class AAA game, scheduled for 5 p.m. The Class A game is slated for 1 p.m..

Freeport: Cole Hepler (forward), Greg Newman (forward), Brendon Zack (defense), John Bird (defense), Dominic Digiacobbe (goalie), Matt Huston (goalie)

Butler: Tanner Gilliland (forward), Troy Double (forward), Logan Rothbauer (goalie), Clay Bachman (gioalie)

Seneca Valley: Chris Marziotto (forward), Tanner Pfeffer (goalie)

Pioneers bested by unbeaten CCBC

Vinnie Schmidt and Brandon Ayers scored 10 points each for Butler County Community College in a 119-46 men’s basketball loss to CCBC (13-0) Wednesday night.

Bill Smith contributed seven rebounds and four assists for the Pioneers (0-10).
