BUTLER TWP — Kevin Rummel scored 29 points and Brent Ayers added 27 Monday as the Butler County Community College men’s basketball team defeated Westmoreland, 89-77.

Bill Smith and Jake Hilliard had nine rebounds each for the Pioneers (3-16) while Vinnie Schmidt had eight assists.

The Pioneer women (3-15) dropped a 73-47 decision despite 15 points and 10 rebounds by Shelby Johnston.

Hess, Cayton join BlueSox rosterUniversity of Pittsburgh product Eric Hess, who played 45 games at first base for the Butler BlueSox last summer, will return to the team this year.Hess hit .259 with 10 doubles and a .381 on-base percentage last season.Kris Cayton, an outfielder transferring to Cal State-Fullerton this year, is also joining the BlueSox. He hit .320 and .313 in successive seasons at Los Angeles Harbor College.

GCC swimmers net conference sweepGROVE CITY — Grove City College’s Eric Fairchild and Angela Palumbo have been named Presidents’ Athletic Conference Male and Female Swimmers of the Week, respectively.Fairchild earned three individual victories against Westminster, then was the top Division III performer at the Pitt Quad in the 50-meter freestyle.Palumbo also earned three wins over Westminster and was the top Division III performer in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free at the Pitt Quad.

Ski standout Vonn injured in big crash SCHLADMING, Austria — Lindsey Vonn will head home for surgery next week in Colorado after tearing ligaments in her right knee and breaking a bone in her lower leg in a crash at the world ski championships.U.S. Ski Team physician William Sterett was with Vonn on the snow after the crash on Tuesday, then at a local hospital where she was airlifted to.Sterett tells The Associated Press that Vonn “will be heading back to Vail and I will be doing surgery on her knee early next week.”

Purdue tops PSU men’s basketball STATE COLLEGE — A rally to close the first half enabled Purdue to ultimately pull away from Penn State in the second half as the Boilermakers evened their Big Ten Conference record at 5-5 with a 58-49 victory Tuesday night over Penn State.The Nittany Lions (8-14) are now 0-10 in conference play.
