Phyllis J. Chappell Thoma

Phyllis J. Chappell Thoma, 91, of Butler passed away Thursday at UPMC St. Margaret in Pittsburgh.

She was born March 8, 1924, in Berwick, Pa., to the late Roy C. Baer and Ethel (Hess) Baer.

A resident of Butler since 1954, Mrs. Thoma was a homemaker and a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Butler, where she sang in the choir for many years. She was an avid golfer and a member of the Butler Country Club and the Lake Arthur Country Club. She had been a member of the Butler Chapter 45 Order of the Eastern Star and a mother adviser for the International Order of Rainbow for Girls Assembly 25. Mrs. Thoma also enjoyed crossword puzzles.

Mrs. Thoma is survived by one daughter, Patricia Shanor and her husband, Gerald, of Butler; one son, William L. Chappell Jr. and his wife, Alice Jane, of Attica, Ohio; three stepdaughters, Patricia Thoma-Lundberg, Suzanne Donahue and Elizabeth Ferrari and her husband, Jack; four stepsons, John W. Thoma, Charles L. Thoma and his wife, Shelly, Dr. James E. Thoma and his wife, Judy, and William L. Thoma; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a wealth of step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and her brother, Richard W. Baer of Berwick, Pa.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. William L. Chappell, who passed away in 1977; her second husband, John S. Thoma, who passed away in 1992; one brother, Gordon Baer; and one sister, Shirley Seybert.

THOMA — According to the wishes of Phyllis J. Chappell Thoma, who died Thursday, Dec. 24, 2015, there will be no public visitation.A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the North Side Cemetery, Butler, with the Rev. James Swanson, pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church, officiating.Arrangements are being handled by the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.Memorials are suggested to the Covenant Presbyterian Church, 230 E.
