MIDDLESEX TWP — Multiple police departments in Butler and Allegheny counties are accusing the owner of a tree-trimming service of taking money and never performing the agreed-upon work.

Jeramiah V. Cubarney, 28, is facing three home improvement fraud cases in Middlesex Township, one in Cranberry Township and more than 10 other cases in Richland, Hampton and McCandless townships.

After his arrest last month on felony charges in Allegheny County, police departments in the region have been working to identify other possible scam victims.

On Oct. 5 in Middlesex Township, he was charged with accepting $1,500 from a Keithwood Drive resident to clean up storm damage and haul away some logs and never performing the work.

Township police filed two additional cases last week.

In one of those cases, police said a North Drive resident paid Cubarney $500 in May to trim some trees and take down several others. The resident said that Cubarney had called him about 30 days later to say that he was injured, but he never returned the money or did the work.

In another case, an Overbrook Road resident told police that she paid Cubarney $1,100 in March of 2016 to cut down two pine trees and trim another tree. She said that he did cut down the pines, but never returned to trim the other tree.

In all three cases, he is charged with misdemeanor deceptive business practices, misdemeanor theft by deception and misdemeanor receives advance payment for services and fails to perform.

He also was charged in September by Cranberry Township police with theft by deception, receiving stolen property and deceptive business practices.

Cubarney is free on $10,000 unsecured bail and has already waived his charges to court.
