Lutherlyn hosts Woodland Quilt Show

Cabin Fever is the theme for the 2019 Woodland Quilt Show at Lutherlyn this weekend.

This nonjudged show is comprised of entries from members of the Woodland Quilters and the general public, 49 participants in all, and will feature more than 100 entries.

Violet Dunmyre of Center Township started quilting about 18 years ago when she was inspired by a quilt she saw.

“I began quilting because I saw a quilt in the visitor's center at the New River Gorge in West Virginia when my husband and I were traveling.

“Although I didn't know the name of the pattern then, I just thought it was beautiful, and it was something I thought I could do,” Dunmyre said. She's been a part of the show for awhile.

“This show is important to all of us Woodland Quilters because all the money raised goes to the Lutherlyn Annual Fund which helps Lutherlyn provide scholarships for children to attend summer camp. It is important to our members to know that no child is turned away at Lutherlyn,” Dunmyre said.

Each year the Woodland Quilters partner with Lutherlyn to hold the quilt show to support Lutherlyn's Annual Fund.

A dedicated group of quilters meet weekly throughout the year at Lutherlyn to work on items for the quilt show and quilt auctions taking place at varying times of the year.

“Typically, this partnership raises more than $10,000 each year to help campers,” said Andrea Dunmyre, development director at Lutherlyn.

“We love the variety of entries we receive,” she said. “In addition to the challenge entries and small quilts in the dining hall there is also an assortment of large quilts in Rice Hall,” she added. There are many opportunities to shop during the show as well. The Woodland Quilters' flea market is always popular, and dotted throughout the show are several quilt shops and local craftspeople with a variety of fabrics, patterns, tools and finished goods for sale.“If you're looking for inspiration you may want to visit the 'Make it & Take It' table, where a few of the Woodland Quilters can guide you through creating a quick project to take home,” said Dunmyer.Attendees also have the opportunity to take a chance at winning a dream basket or even one of the quilts created by the Woodland Quilters.Quilter Robin Brown of Connoquenessing Township started quilting as a hobby 11 years ago.“I started when I was invited to a crafting retreat at Lutherlyn,” said Brown, who was crocheting at the time. “These ladies were having so much fun with their quilting, I just had to join them.”Brown believes she's made 100 quilts. “I usually give them as gifts or donate them to Lutherlyn for fundraisers,” said Brown. She meets weekly with a dozen or so quilters at Lutherlyn. For more information on the Woodland Quilters, visitors can speak to any of them at the show or send contact information to development@lutherlyn.com or visit the Woodland Quilters' Facebook page.
