BRADY TWP — A teenager driving a Ford Taurus was shaken up but apparently not injured late Wednesday night when her car plowed into two loose cows on the road, authorities said.

The cows weren’t so lucky.

One bovine was briefly airborne and thrown over the vehicle, but not before crash landing on the car’s roof. The other cow got pinned under the vehicle.

Both animals were killed.

The vehicle was totaled in the freak accident on Route 528 near Lindey Road in Brady Township about 10 p.m., a short time after several cows, possibly four or five, broke free from a nearby farm.

The animals hoofed it down the road. Two ended up in the middle of the eastbound lane.

Samantha Albert, 19, of Butler was traveling east on Route 528, also known as Prospect Road, and didn’t see the animals.

Trooper Jason Frances said it was dark and there are no street lights along the road.

“One of the cows, the larger one, went up over the car and landed on the roof, ” he said. “It caved in the roof and windshield.”

Investigators suspect the windshield came down and struck Albert. She was covered in blood when police and emergency crews got there.

“We thought it was hers but it was the cow’s blood,” Frances said.

The other stray cows apparently were scared off.

“People there said they ran into the woods,” said Unionville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Nathan Wulff.

The accident left Albert upset, authorities said. A Butler Ambulance Service crew examined her at the scene but she did not appear to have any injuries.

She was wearing a seat belt, police said, and her driver’s side air bag deployed.

Looking at the damaged 2002 Ford, and the carnage left behind, Frances admitted he was surprised that Albert escaped injury. But something else struck him while he spoke to her.

“It seemed she was more worried about the cows,” he said, “than about herself.”

The owner of the cows, whose name was not immediately available, eventually arrived with a skid loader and hauled away the carcasses.

Frances said no charges would be filed in the accident.
