Dispute over cat lands son in jail on birthday

CENTER TWP — A man's 27th birthday ended with him behind bars.

Jeffrey Ford Jr. celebrated his birthday Sunday. He was also arrested and charged with allegedly threatening his father with a gun following a domestic dispute over a cat.

According to the affidavit, state police received a call around 3:47 p.m. Sunday from Ford Sr., the suspect's father, regarding a dispute between the two.

Police talked to the father around 5 p.m. at the barracks.

The affidavit said Ford Sr. told police he, Ford Jr. and Vicky Bolten, Ford Jr.'s mother, arrived at their home on Pinehurst Road.

“When I walked in the house, it smelled like cat urine,” Ford Sr. said to police. “I got pissed off because my son's cat had peed on the carpet.”

Ford Sr. said he yelled at his son, and he grabbed at the son's cat, “squeezing it badly.”

“I grabbed at the cat. He wouldn't give the cat up,” Ford Sr. told police.

The two continued a tug of war over the cat, which included shoving and squeezing it until the son hurried to his room.

Ford Sr. said he heard a weapon cocked, followed by his son re-entering the room and pointing a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol at him.

“He pointed the firearm at me and continued his rant of how unfair the world is,” Ford Sr. told police. “I sat down and stared at him while he was feeling so powerful.”

According to the affidavit, Ford Jr. exited the room at some point, and Ford Sr. fled the house to call 911.

Around 5 p.m., police arrived at 115 Barney Lane, where they found and arrested Ford Jr.

A search of Ford Jr.'s car allegedly produced multiple pieces of drug paraphernalia, including a vaporizer and a white rubber container with suspected THC in it.

Police also found a Marlin Model 15 .22LR rifle in the car, and Ford Jr. allegedly admitted he did not have a valid concealed carry permit.

Police later found the 9 mm handgun at the family's home.

Police charged Ford Jr. with three felony counts: aggravated assault, terroristic threats and carrying a firearm without a license; four misdemeanors: possession with intent to use, drug paraphernalia, simple assault and reckless endangerment; and three summary charges: harassment, cruelty to animals and failing to change his address on his driver's license.

Ford Jr. is being held in Butler County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bond following his arraignment Monday before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.

No-contact pretrial conditions were imposed. Any weapons owned by Ford Jr. are to be collected by the sheriff's office and his cats must be surrendered to his mother.

A tentative preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
