Boy, 13, in custody for school shooting threat

Butler notified parents Wednesday morning

BUTLER TWP — A 13-year-old male student at the Butler Area Intermediate High School was arrested Wednesday morning after posting a threat on social media regarding a school shooting, police said.

Lt. David Fish of Butler Township Police said another student at the school who saw the threat on social media called police at 7:32 a.m. to report a photo of the school's exterior that accompanied a “disturbing message.”

Fish revealed the message was regarding a school shooting.

The student was charged with terroristic threats and disorderly conduct. Butler County Juvenile Probation is handling the student's prosecution due to his age.

He is in custody at a juvenile facility, Fish said.

Fish said police could not substantiate the specific threat made by the student.

“We don't know of any means to carry that threat out,” Fish said.

School Superintendent Brian White notified all Butler Area School District parents on Wednesday morning regarding the threat.

School was held on Wednesday as usual because the student was immediately identified and taken into custody by police.

“The school district takes all threats seriously and will engage in all appropriate disciplinary action under the student code of conduct and under Pennsylvania state law,” White said in the notice to parents.
