The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is accepting grant applications for the new Food Recovery Infrastructure Grant Program.

The program provides assistance to eligible nonprofit organizations such as shelters and food banks for proper food management.

Grants of up to $200,000 are available to purchase equipment like refrigerators, freezers, refrigerated vehicles, and more to use food before it becomes waste for disposal.

Janine Kennedy with the Alliance for Nonprofit Resources, which manages the Butler County Food Bank, said the organization aims to serve as much fresh food as possible.

She said the organization doesn't typically hang onto food for too long, nor do local food cupboards and pantries.

“The goal is to get the food and get it out into the hands of those that need it,” Kennedy said.
