Severe weather that hit West Sunbury was a tornado

WEST SUNBURY — The violent weather that caused damage to several structures Monday night has been classified as an EF0 tornado.

Frank McMullen, meteorologist with the National Weather Service said it’s not unusual for tornado damage to be very contained. This particular tornado has been classified as the lowest on a scale that goes up to 5.

McMullen, who visited the properties this morning, said in other parts of the county and region there was up to 2 inches of rain but really very little storm activity.

“It wasn’t a day we expected a tornado,” McMullen said, noting there wasn’t even much lightning that evening. “But it only takes one cell.”

McMullen said pressure remaining from a storm earlier in the afternoon might have collided with the evening storm increasing the wind shear.

“Western Pennsylvania averages four tornadoes a year. Butler County got two of them,” McMullen said.

On June 28, an EF0 tornado touched ground in the area of Chaparral Drive in Cranberry Township.

No one was hurt. Officials reported more than a dozen trees were uprooted in its path.
