HARMONY — Borough council received an update Tuesday on the status of truck damage to welcome signs at Harmony's front gate.

Councilman Joe Dippold said that far fewer trucks have entered where they aren't permitted since signs were added and moved to reroute the trucks. Dippold noted that one trucker started to enter Main Street before noticing the $600 fine signage and backing up.

The damaged welcome signs, which haven't been fixed yet, will be cleaned up, but no details about replacing the signs have been finalized as a mission to “beautify the square” is in its initial, idea-driven phases.

The council hasn't yet received the money owed for truck damage, though they were owed a response within 30 days of the damage, which has since passed.

The council also unanimously approved the placement of a handicap parking sign after overturning Mayor Cathy Rape's veto.

The mayor exercised her right to veto, she said, because she believed the “no parking” sign at the Harmony Inn's turnaround was reducing previous traffic issues.

The parking area most affects a soon-to-be 99-year-old resident of Spring Street who does not have a driveway and whose relatives frequently visit to help him pay bills, buy groceries and complete other daily tasks.

Relatives of the resident attended Tuesday night to hear the ordinance pass. Frank Grannon, operations director, said the sign will be up sometime Wednesday.
