NORTH BUFFALO TWP — Volunteers found a missing Armstrong County man Wednesday afternoon.

His location ended two days of searching by volunteers, family and friends of Paul Walker, 70, of North Buffalo Township, who is believed to have dementia.

Walker had last been seen around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at his farm on Walker Road, authorities said.

Supporting the search — which included volunteer firefighters from a number of fire departments — were tracking dogs, a state police helicopter and a drone, according to emergency crews.

Matt McCrea, assistant chief of the South Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Department, said volunteers found Walker sleeping in a brushy field about three miles from his home.

“The volunteers called out his name. He woke up and said ‘Hello,’” McCrea said.

McCrea said Walker was thirsty but otherwise appeared to be in good shape mentally and physically.

“Once the medics checked him out, we got him out of the woods and to the ambulance,” McCrea said. “He was well, alert and was joking around with us when we found him.”

McCrea said Walker told his rescuers that he left to go for a walk.

“He wanted to see the countryside,” McCrea said.

Wednesday’s search resumed shortly after day break. It followed a more than eight-hour search that began Tuesday evening, ending around 2 a.m. Wednesday, McCrea said.

He said between the volunteers and nearly 10 companies, 80 people were involved in the hunt, accounting for about 26 hours.

Participating in the search were Walker’s family and friends as well as firefighters from departments in North Buffalo and South Buffalo townships, Freeport, West Kittanning, Ford City, Ford Cliff and Burrell Township.

Salvation Army members also helped look. Search dogs from Armstrong and Westmoreland counties and a state police helicopter were deployed.
