Faulty furnace fills city house with smoke

Butler firefighters this morning ventilated smoke from a house on West Wayne Street caused by a defective furnace.

Fire Chief Nick Ban said a problem with the furnace at 421 W. Wayne St. resulted in the house filling with smoke.

That section of the street was closed while crews ventilated the two-story house.

The 911 call was made at 7:26 a.m.

Ban estimated damages at $3,000 to $5,000.

Electricity to the house was shut off until the furnace could be repaired.

Ban said the American Red Cross is helping homeowner Lori Haller, who is insured, until she can return home.
