Mars woman gets look at curious bear
MARS — Denise Hager likely had the most interesting Facebook post this morning among her list of friends.
Hager picked up a friend at about 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday, and saw a strange shape across Pittsburgh Street when she came to the stop sign at the bottom of the Lincoln Avenue hill.
“I said, 'Is that a bear?'” Hager said. “He was just standing there.”
The “he” Hager referred to was a black bear of indeterminate weight and gender.
“It was not a baby, but it wasn't gigantic,” she said. “Maybe it was a mama bear.”
She turned south onto Pittsburgh Street as the ursine visitor hung out between the Planet Mart and St. John Specialty Care.
“I rolled down the window and it walked toward us, then took off into the woods,” Hager recalled.
She and her husband saw a black bear many years ago on Babcock Boulevard just to the south of the Adams Township border.
Hager said she told her husband she would love to see another one, and her wish was granted on Tuesday morning.
“I thought he was kinda cute,” she said.
