ZELIENOPLE — The borough's first councilwoman and its first elected mayor Mary Santoro has died.

Borough council Monday honored her with a moment of silence. The council also will designate a Mary Santoro Day later on.

She died Monday morning at the Evergreen Nursing Center in Harmony. She was 72.

In 1980, Santoro became the first woman elected to Zelienople council. She served on the council from 1980 to 1993.

She was elected mayor in 1994 and served until 1997.

Her funeral will be Thursday morning at St. Gregory Roman Catholic Church.

The Boylan Funeral Home in Zelienople is handling her funeral arrangements.
