Man allegedly broke into home

Victim says he threw furniture

A man is behind bars on charges he forced his way into his estranged wife's home in Butler, breaking windows and furniture, and injuring her in the process.

City police said when they got there Jerry Phillips Jr., 32, of Butler repeatedly stated, “I finally broke.”

He is charged with burglary, simple assault and criminal mischief stemming from the incident last week on the 300 block of Morton Avenue. He is in the Butler County Prison in lieu of $15,000 bond.

The victim told police that Phillips showed up unannounced shortly before 3 a.m. Nov. 2 and broke four windows on the first story of the house, according to charging documents.

She advised that they are legally separated and that he has not lived there since May. When he moved out, she changed the locks, barring him from the home.

Phillips allegedly broke the glass on a locked storm door and forced the wooden door open to get inside, police said.

The victim recounted that Phillips “picked up and threw various pieces of furniture,” documents said, “including a large stand which fell on her causing a laceration on her left arm.”

Police in their complaint noted that when they got to the house, they found several pieces of overturned and broken furniture as well as broken windows.

Phillips also was there. He smelled of alcohol and was “sweating profusely.”

His preliminary hearing is set Nov. 18. Online court records did not list an attorney for him.
