John Marshalek

John Marshalek, 96, of Rural Ridge, Indiana Township, died Tuesday with his family by his side.

John has lived in Rural Ridge for the past 72 years where he grew up. He was born June 8, 1921, in Russellton to the late Frank G. and Sophie (Tyksinski) Marshalek.

John went to work in the coal mines as a shift foreman for the Republic Steel Mine in Russellton, where he worked for over 42 years.

John served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant, receiving four Bronze Stars and an Arrowhead Medal.

He was a member of Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church in Russellton, the UMWA, Life Member of the Owl's Club, where he served as an officer for over 50 years, the Tarentum VFW, where he served on the honor guard, the American Legion in Harrison, also serving on the honor guard, and the Springdale Sportsman Club.

He enjoyed gardening, carpentry, helping his neighbors and family, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his children, Elona “Lonnie” J. (Dan) Marunich of Washington, Pa., Earl T. (Deborah) Marshalek of Springdale Township and William J. (Sally) Marshalek of Clinton Township; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his sisters, Helen Marshalek of Bairdford, Anna Marie Horrick of Russellton, and Bridget McCorkle of Shaler.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy T. (Brozek) Marshalek, in 1985; his sisters, Vergie Marshalek and Doris M. Swaiko; and his granddaughter, Ashley Marshalek.

MARSHALEK — Family of John Marshalek, who died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017, will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at SIWICKI-YANICKO FUNERAL HOME, 23 McKrell Road, Russellton, West Deer, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday with the Rev.
