SEVEN FIELDS — An 18-year-old man is being held without bail on charges he shot and killed an 18-year-old woman with a shotgun at his home in this borough Tuesday.

Cranberry Township police arrested Eric Daniel Rutledge on a general charge of homicide in the death of Courtney Rose Daily of Colorado.

Police suspect Rutledge shot Daily with a 12-gauge shotgun at 102 Woodhaven Drive, where he lives with his mother.

However, Rutledge called the shooting an accident, according to court documents. He admitted pointing the gun at Daily but he believed it was not loaded.

The shotgun blast hit the woman in the upper right shoulder and chest area.

Police have not determined the extent of Rutledge’s relationship with the woman, said police Lt. Kevin Meyer. He called the two “childhood friends.”

Daily died early this morning in a Pittsburgh hospital. The Allegheny County Coroner’s office at 9:15 a.m. today said an autopsy was being conducted to determine an official cause of death.
