Topographic maps useful items to have

A topographic map provides a way to observe the shape of the land.

It allows people to see variations, including woodlands, lakes, natural features, buildings, mines, roads and wells.

Elevation variations are shown by brown contour lines. Water is blue and woodlands green, while roads and manmade features appear black and red.

Contour lines on the map connect points of equal elevation along the land surface. The darker contour lines have the elevation recorded on them.

By looking at the arrangement and spacing of contour lines, it's possible to get a view of Butler County's watersheds.

Maps are an essential part of ecosystem management, geological research and surface and groundwater investigations.

They are essential for flood control, soil conservation and reforestation projects in watersheds.

Other basic uses include planning for airports, highways, livestock confinement, wastewater treatment plants, lakes, pipelines, wetlands and almost any type of construction project.

Also, accurate maps show clearings, relief features, watercourses, wooded areas and other features of great value to bicyclists, hikers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts.

The Butler County Conservation District sells topographic maps for the public's use. For more information, call 724-284-5270.

• Sunnyview community garden plots are available. Phone the Conservation District for more information on reserving a space. There are just a few spots remaining, on a first come, first serve basis.

Ron Fodor is district manager of the Butler County Conservation District.
