Trail races offered at North Park
With rain and cold surely in the November forecast, this weekend may be the last opportunity for runners to romp through the fall foliage.
Head south to nearby North Park this Saturday for a choice of trail races within park boundaries.
Early risers can check out the fifth Annual Marshall Mangler, beginning at 7 a.m. at North Park Ice Rink. Marshall Mangler offers a distance for runners (and hikers) of any skill or experience level with a separate start for each — 50 kilometer run starting at 7 a.m., 25K run or hike starting at 8 a.m., and an entry level 5 mile run/ hike at 8:30 a.m.
Although the course has not changed, this year’s event is being held earlier than in past seasons. Race director and trail racer Michelle Wojnar-Frere says that the date was chosen so as not to conflict with other important trail races in the region and large road running events such as EQT 10-Mile in Pittsburgh Nov. 9.
“We’ll schedule future races on a year-to-year basis,” Wojnar says.
Michelle expects 400 to 500 participants for the trail run which attracts runners from as far as Canada. Approximately 75 to 100 runners typically enter the 50K race which has an 8-hour time limit while remaining entries are split between the more popular, shorter distances.
Because ultra runners and hikers will be on the course for up to eight hours, Marshall Mangler’s aid stations offer more than water, sports drink and gels. The two manned and one unmanned station will be stocked with soda, pretzels and chips, candy and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
There will also be plenty of food and drink following the race. Finishers will enjoy pizza, cookies and beer. Top three overall and masters men and women in the 50K race earn special glasses and gift certificates. In the 25K and 5 mile distances, top three men and women in 10-year age brackets also earn awards.
Marshall Mangler raises money for Pittsburgh-based Operation Troop Appreciation, an organization which supports both troops deployed around the world and their families and returning veterans. In the past four years, Marshall Mangler has raised more than $15,000.
Marshall Mangler accepts day-of-event registrations beginning at 6 a.m. at North Park Ice Rink. The event also accepts day-of-event volunteers. For more information, call 412-490-0881 or visit elitetrailrunners.com
On the other side of North Park, Dirt Monster 5 Mile Trail Race and 1 Mile Trail Walk starts at 9:30 a.m. at Grant Pavilion on Wildwood Road. This marks the eighth year for this trail race on the first Saturday in November in support of Obsessive Compulsive Foundation of Western PA.
Elaine Davis, PhD., race director and president of OCFWPA has spent weeks laying out the challenging course and marking the trail with signs so that no one gets lost. “We’ll also have lots of volunteers, especially at critical points on the course,” she says.
Davis expects participation numbers to be down slightly from the usual 100+ due to the scheduling conflict with Marshall Mangler. Davis has also noticed a dip in entries during years when the event is held the morning after Halloween.
Dirt Monster offers cash prizes to the top three overall male and female finishers and merchandise awards to top three masters men and women. Age groups Under 18 through 60-plus earn competitive awards and there’s a team competition for mixed gender teams of between three and five members. All participants will enjoy post race refreshments of soup, snacks and craft beer along with water and sports drinks.
Race day registrations are welcome beginning at 7:30 a.m. at North Park’s Grant Pavilion. For more information, visit www.ocfwpa.org.
