Edna J. Sankey

Edna J. Sankey, 96, formerly of New Castle, passed away Sunday morning at Butler Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Pittsburgh, the daughter of Charles C. and Nora M. (Delphey) Woods.

Edna spent her early years living between Pittsburgh and Butler. She worked in Pittsburgh at the number one Eat 'n Park, when it opened in 1949. She was also known for her many Avon customers.

In 1955, Edna and her family moved to New Castle, and she loved it from day one. As the years passed, she was very active in her community, working at the Cascade Inn, selling Avon into her 80s, holding the office of president at her senior center and enjoying her times with the AMVETS, marching in parades whenever she could.

Edna loved to sing, and when living at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, she could always be heard singing in the halls.

Edna was a member of St. Vitas Roman Catholic Church in New Castle.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Norma (Harry) Piper of Butler, Charles (Shirley) Mohan of Indianapolis, Ind., Barbara Sword of Butler, Nora May Barnes of New Castle, Robert (Joyce) Mohan of Kentucky, Norman (Lynn) Young of New Wilmington and Edna Rivera of California.

She also is survived by 24 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Edna was preceded in death by her brother, Samuel T. Woods; her sister, Sarah M. Niggel; her brother, Robert P. Robinson; her husbands, Leslie L. Mohan, Norman A. Young and Ralph Sankey; her daughters, Dorothy M. Bennet, Betsy A. Wheale; and Edna's companion of 10 years, Theadore Korab.

SANKEY — Friends of Edna J. Sankey, who died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.A blessing service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
