John Smith Sr.
John Henry Smith Sr., 71, of Cabot passed away Wednesday at Concordia Good Samaritan Hospice following an extended illness.
He was born April 4, 1944. John enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing and camping with his grandchildren, listening to classic country music and sitting on the back porch watching the birds.
He was always tinkering with something or getting involved in family projects. He was a jack of all trades and was often turned to for advice. John held many names given to him by his friends and family: Smit, Handle, Hon, Dad, Uncle Bull and mostly Pappy.
John earned the respect of many and never expected more of others than he didn't expect of himself. Slow to anger, quick to laugh and stubborn, John was a good man who lived a full happy life and will be dearly missed by all who loved him.
John attended Knoch High School before marrying his high school sweetheart and joining the Moonlight Mushroom Farm. He retired from Creekside Mushroom Farm as a production manager after 43½ years of service in 2006. He lived every day of retirement to its fullest.
John was the loving husband of Terry A. Fend Barr Smith, who he married Oct. 2, 2007.
John was extremely loving and proud of his family; his son, John Smith Jr. and daughter-in-law, Kim of Cabot; three daughters, Vicki Denny and son-in-law, Mike of Butler, Connie Lowe and son-in-law, Michael of Murrysville and Jackie Kulfan and son-in-law, Anthony of Mars; nine grandchildren, Kyle and Ellen Smith, Ryan, Lauren and Megan Denny, Morgan, Zachary and Kate Lowe and Mitchell Kulfan; and one great-granddaughter, Gracie Twentier. He is also survived by his sister, Donna Stover of Cabot; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Elery and Lillian (Carr) Smith, John was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna (Poston) Smith, who he married Oct. 20, 1962, and who passed away Feb. 6, 1998.
