Police seek bridge jumper’s infant son

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Rescue crews are searching the Connecticut River for a 7-month-old boy who may have been with his father when the man jumped from a Connecticut bridge.

Police say 22-year-old Tony Morano of Middletown called someone about 11:45 p.m. Sunday, saying he would jump from the Arrigoni Bridge between Middletown and Portland. That person contacted police and said a baby could be heard in the background.

Police say they saw Morano jump into the Connecticut River, but did not see a baby with him.

Middletown firefighters pulled him from the water and transported him to Hartford Hospital where he is in serious condition. The infant is still missing and rescuers have been searching the river.

Infant found safe on side of road

PASADENA, Md. — A baby was left on the side of the road Sunday and her mother has been charged with child neglect, officials said.

Officials with the Anne Arundel County Police Department say Sandra Clara McClary is also charged with reckless endangerment after her 3-month-old daughter was found just before midnight in a scuffed carrier in Pasadena after a resident called to report the abandoned child.

Authorities say McClary left the baby on the side of the road.

The baby was taken to a hospital after she was discovered and is in good condition. She is in the custody of the Department of Child Protective Services.

5 hurt when man sets off fireworks

HOLLISTER, Calif. — A man has been arrested in the central California city of Hollister on suspicion of setting off fireworks at a July Fourth block party, sending at least five people to the hospital.

A police statement said 35-year-old Shawn Gregory Bourdet was arrested at the scene of the explosion Saturday night and told officers he was responsible for what happened.

Police said a lit mortar fell over and shot projectiles into a crowd, hitting several people who were at the outdoor block party.

A child was flown to a San Francisco Bay Area hospital with severe injuries, several children suffered moderate to severe burns and one person had a possible broken leg.

Boy, 7, killed during July 4 celebrations

CHICAGO — Authorities say a 7-year-old boy who was celebrating the Fourth of July with his family was among three people who were shot and killed overnight in Chicago.

Police say the child, Amari Brown, was shot after someone opened fire just before midnight Saturday in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. He was pronounced dead early Sunday at Stroger Hospital.

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Sunday at a news conference that the boy’s father, a “ranking gang member,” had been the intended target. No one was in custody Sunday.

Additionally, a 26-year-old man was fatally shot in the Albany Park neighborhood and a 26-year-old man was gunned down in the South Shore neighborhood.

Police also say two men, ages 25 and 31, were killed after dawn Sunday when somebody fired on their SUV, which sped away and crashed.

2 dead, 3 missing after boat capsizes

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Two people were killed and three remained missing after the pontoon boat they were riding in hit a barge and capsized in the Ohio River.

Louisville Fire Chief Greg Frederick said nine people were aboard the boat and that four were rescued after the accident shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday. He said three of those rescued were children and that they were wearing life jackets.

Frederick said the fatalities include one adult and one child. He said a child is among the missing.
