CRANBERRY TWP — An online safety rating and information website has named Cranberry Township the 52nd safest town in the nation.

The site, www.safewise.com, took into account property and violent crime data rates published by the FBI. It excluded towns and cities with low populations or ones that failed to turn in data on time.

“I think we've maintained a consistent level of safety,” said Cranberry Township Police Sgt. Chuck Mascellino. “Most of our crime is property related, (rather) than violent crime.”

According to Safewise, Cranberry Township has a violent crime rate of 0.224 per 1,000 residents and a property crime rate of 9.298 per 1,000 residents. The overall number is determined by violent crime rates with ties being decided by property crime rates.

“Cranberry has been safe for quite some time,” Mascellino said. “We try to be proactive and prevent things from happening. Our biggest thing is the property crimes.”

These include thefts from vehicles left unlocked overnight, he said. Police frequently put out notices warning residents to lock their vehicles and not to leave valuables in them when not in use.

According to the site, crime rates across the country have been falling for the past two decades with the past two years following this trend with violet crime rates dropping by 49 percent between 1993 and 2017.

Property crime rates have also dropped about 50 percent during that time period and haven't seen an increase since 2001.
