Mary Rehm

Mary Stella (Czyzyk) Rehm, a former U.S. Marine and a former social worker at the Butler Veterans Administration, died at her home in Butler on Thursday. She was 97.

Mrs. Rehm was married for 41 years to Robert C. Rehm Sr., the painter and art teacher, who died in 1988.

After the youngest of their 12 children started first grade, she began college as a freshman, and received a master's degree in social work from the University of Pittsburgh. She was then hired as a social worker at the Butler Veterans Administration, where she served a decade before retiring.

In World War II, she received military training at Camp Lejeune in 1942, where her graduating class of recruits paraded before President Franklin Roosevelt. Mrs. Rehm was stationed at the U.S. Marine Warehouses at Lambert's Point in Norfolk, Va., until the war in Europe ended.She returned to her job as stockroom manager at the G.C. Murphy Co., and later at the Bantam Car Co.She was married in 1946 at St. Stanislaus Church in Lyndora.Mrs. Rehm was the daughter of Julius and Anelia Czyzyk of Lyndora, both immigrants from Poland.Mary Rehm is survived by her children, three daughters and six sons, Barbara Rehm della Porta of Washington, D.C., Dr. Theresa (Tom) Thewes of Edinboro, Joan (Roy) Schnur of Mechanicsburg, Thomas (Ann Weise) Rehm, James (Rita Pennington) Rehm, John, Michael and David Rehm, all of Butler, and William (Karen Rossi) Rehm of Carrboro, N.C.She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 14 great-nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughters, Mary Ann Rehm and Susannah (Andrew Gress) Rehm; her son, Robert C. Rehm Jr.; and a son-in-law, Agustin della Porta.REHM — Friends of Mary Stella (Czyzyk) Rehm, who died Thursday, March 11, 2021, will be received from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E.
