What’s the most romantic film ever?
Romance, like beauty, appears to be in the eye of the beholder. Ask 10 people what their favorite romantic movie is and be prepared to get 10 different answers.
Residents of Butler County weighed in on what is considered the most romantic movie of all time.
Melissa Grantz, assistant principal at Knoch High School, said her favorite romantic movie is 2001's "Serendipity" starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale.
"It's a love-at-first-sight and also a meant-to-be-together type movie," Grantz said.
She added that the restaurant, Serendipity, that is featured in the movie has several locations.
"I have been to the one in Vegas and the frozen hot chocolate is amazing!" Grantz said.
Jennifer Ford, executive director of Butler County Historical Society, likes “The Lion in Winter.”
“It’s arguably one of the most brilliant movies of the late 20th century, 1968 to be precise. They were deeply in love at the beginning of their romance as many people are,” Ford said, “As does happen after 30 years of marriage and a raft of kids, they lived to wound each other and, as they were king and queen, they can do it with lands, power, title, position and people’s lives. They used the world as pawns in their game of hurting each other.”
But, she added, “At their cores they are completely mad for each other. As long as he keeps her in jail, they are very happy.“
Sheila Talarico, executive director of the Glade Run Foundation in Zelienople, said her favorite romantic movie is “Love Actually.”
“I know it’s kind of a Christmas movie,” she said. “It’s the one movie that every time it comes on you watch. I like it because of the different couples, the way the different couples are all related and not everything works out for everyone in the end.
“So it’s realistic in a way. And love looks differently to everyone,” Talarico said.
Master Gardener Lisa Bernardo said, “I just saw it the other night, ‘Sabrina,' the original with Audrey Hepburn, because Audrey Hepburn was just so beautiful.
“It’s a sort of how you might think of love one way, and it turns out to be something else. What she believes about love turns out to be something else,” she said. “And the landscaping and the flowers were terrific.”
Kathy Corcoran, Zelienople Rotary Club past president and current district membership chairwoman, said “Moonstruck” is her favorite.
“I have watched it several times a year ever since it came out. I love that movie. I am half Italian, and I guess I identify with the characters, and family members that I grew up with,” she said.“ But I just think it is the best, and Cher is a favorite performer of mine as well. It was my first date with my husband, and I own a copy of it and I watch it often.”
Ken and Liz Smith, directors of Hobnob Theatre Company had completely different opinions on the most romantic movie.
“Off the top of my head, I’d have to say Franco Zeffirelli’s ‘Romeo and Juliet,’“ Ken Smith said. “It’s the ultimate love story. It’s got romance and violence and sensuality. Despite all of their families’ perceived differences they gave each other their lives.”
“Hands down the most romantic movie I’ve ever seen is ‘Truly, Madly, Deeply,’” Liz Smith said. “It’s one of Alan Rickman’s early movies. He stars opposite Juliet Stevenson, and they are just brilliant. It’s both moving and quirky.”
John Furman, executive director of Butler County Symphony Orchestra, said he asked around the symphony office for a general consensus.
“There’s so many, it’s hard to say,” he said.“ When I polled people at the office, some people say ”Casablanca“ and some say ”Ghost.“”
