Park repairs to start soon since city reimbursed

The grounds and equipment at Father Marinaro Park will be repaired and replaced after Butler City was reimbursed for most of the damage caused by vandals in August.

According to police, three suspects spray painted the skate park — tagging buildings, fencing and fence posts, wooden ramps and concrete work. An estimate received by the city's parks department shows the work is expected to cost $16,827.

Butler police said two of the suspects — Dane Smith, 23, of Butler, and Kyle Young, 19, of Evans City — admitted to spray-painting graffiti at the park earlier this month. The third suspect is a 15-year-old boy. Police charged all three with felony counts of criminal mischief and conspiracy.

Smith is expected back in court on Sept. 30 for his preliminary hearing. Young missed his preliminary hearing on Sept. 16, and an arrest warrant the next day was issued for him and he had yet to be found as of Friday afternoon.

Officials reported Friday the city's insurance company reimbursed $13,976. The reduced amount accounts for a depreciation in value and a $1,000 deductible. The cost of cleanup and repairs broke down into three categories — paint repairs, replacement of the skate ramp and fence repairs.

Butler Police Chief Bob O'Neill said the department received a report of the vandalism Aug. 9. Lyndora resident Cindy Parker discovered the graffiti.

The tagging was done in letters, words and symbols Parker said in a previous article.

She reported the vandalism to the parks department, which notified police.

Repairs are expected to start soon, according to a city spokeswoman.
