SRU men survive at Clarion, 61-60
CLARION — Vinny Lasley converted a layup with 10 seconds remaining Saturday, giving the Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team a 61-60 win Saturday at Clarion.
The host Golden Eagles got off a mid-range jumper with three seconds left, but it caromed off the rim as The Rock (18-7, 15-3) held on for the victory.
SRU needs one win in its final three regular season games — or one Mercyhurst loss — to clinch a first-round bye in the upcoming PSAC Tournament.
John Warren II led The Rock with 13 points. Nolen Gerald added 10 points and four assists while Lasley compiled nine points and 11 rebounds. SRU played without All-American Micah Till for the third consecutive game.
Clarion (5-17, 3-14) was led by RJ Laugand with 13 points.
Clarion 92, SRU (women) 78 — The Rock (10-14, 8-10) struggled in this road loss to Clarion (9-15, 3-14).
Madison Johnson paced SRU with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Ciara Patterson added 17 points, including four treys. Karington Ketterer came off the bench to tally nine points.
Despite the loss, he Rock remains a full game ahead of Gannon for the final tournament spot in the PSAC West.
Yndiah Bobo led the Golden Eagles with 19 points.
Both SRU teams host Edinboro Wednesday night. The women play at 5:30 p.m., the men at 7:30 p.m.
Softball
The Rock dropped three games over the weekend in Myrtle Beach, losing 14-1 to New Haven, 3-0 to Saint Anselm and 4-3 in extra innings to Merrimack.
Becca Roesch had the lone RBI for SRU (1-4) against New Haven. Aubrey Allen had a run-scoring triple and scored against Merrimack.
SRU plays Virginia State in Petersburg, Va., Saturday.
Women’s Tennis
The Rock defeated Notre Dame (Ohio) 7-0 Sunday, improving to 4-2.
Lacey Cohen, Olivia Warner, Viola Lugmayr and Lois Page all scored singles and doubles victories.
