PENN TWP — One swing and history was made.

Merril Moses, 89, scored a hole-in-one on the No. 4, 122-yard hole Wednesday at Butler Country Club. He is believed to be the oldest golfer to ever shoot a hole-in-one at the facility that was incorporated in 1908.

“That’s what they tell me,” Moses said. “You have to be lucky to do something like that, but you have to make a good shot, too.”

Moses used a 3-hybrid to get his ace. He was playing the round with his son, Tim, along with Jeff Baur and Joe Scherer.

“He hit it straight and it was heading toward the hole,” Tim Moses said of the shot. “Like any shot like that, you start saying, ‘get in the hole, get in the hole.’ Then I saw it roll in.

“Dad didn’t even look at it. He never saw it go in. He’s just amazing. The guy’s 89 and when he swings a golf cllub, there’s no shaking, no tremor — he’s steady as can be.”

Moses said his son was more excited about the ace than he was.

“Tim went nuts,” Moses said, laughing. “Guys all around us just screamed. People started grabbing me and hugging me.”

Moses shot a 95 for the round. He says he is a 24-handicap golfer. He did carry a 9-handicap “years ago, when I was a decent golfer.”

Moses’ ace was the second of his lifetime. His first occurred 15 years ago — on the same hole. He has been a BCC member for 44 years.

He plays golf at least once a week.

His three playing partners Wednesday are all in their 50’s. None has ever shot a hole-in-one.

“Jeff and Joe weren’t even supposed to play the round with us,” Tim Moses said. “Dad and I were teeing off by ourselves and they were coming up, ready to play behind us.

“We’ve known them for a long time and asked them to join us for the day.”

Baur is glad they did. He had never witnessed a hole-in-one.

“I was like, ‘Oh my God,’ when Merril hit that shot,” Baur said. “I’ve been playing golf for 25 years and never saw anything like that.

“To witness that was just a special treat. I felt privileged because I got to sign his card. It was a neat thing.

“Merril is a gold standard at this club. He’s been here forever ... just a class guy,” Baur added.

Moses has shot his age three times — at age 79, 82 and 83.

“That’s a tough thing to do in golf,” he said. “A hole-in-one can be considered a lucky shot. Yeah, you have to hit it straight, you can’t bank it off a tree or anything, but shooting my age is something I’m really proud of.

“This (hole-in-one) was a thrill, though. I threw my club in the air when it happened.”

Tim said the ball “rolled into the cup like a putt.”

The ace did prove a bit costly to Moses. He said everybody drank a toast to him in the clubhouse after the round.

“It’s a custom here that the guy who gets a hole-in-one buys the round of drinks,” he said. “There had to be 20 to 30 people in there, so it cost me a few bucks.

“That was OK. That one was well worth it.”
