SRU men clinch PSAC home game

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University’s men’s basketball team guaranteed itself a home game in the upcoming PSAC Tournament with an 89-63 victory over Pitt-Johnstown Saturday at Morrow Field House.

The Rock (20-7, 14-7) can finish no worse than fourth in the PSAC West. SRU could win its regular season finale at Gannon next Saturday to claim second place. It could also slip into a three-way tie for second and fall into fourth place.

The second-place team in the league will receive a first-round bye in the tournament.

SRU honored its seniors before Saturday’s game and four made significant contributions to the win. Merdic Green scored 16 points and Khyree Wooten 14. Christal Malalu scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds while Tony Gates scored four points off the bench.

Micah Till led The Rock with 22 points and 17 rebounds, his 19th double-double of the year. He needs 25 points to become the fifth Rock player to score 600 points in a season.

Brandon Simmons scored 17 points and had eight rebounds while Bruce Spruell had a career-high 12 assists.

Dale Clancy paced the Mountain Cats (14-11, 12-9) with 18 points.

Pitt-Johnstown 70, SRU 58 (women) — The Rock’s loss guaranteed it will enter the PSAC Tournament as the sixth seed out of the Western Division.

Brooke Hinderliter scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds for SRU (12-14, 10-11). Morgan Henderson netted 10 points and Karns City graduate LeeAnn Gibson scored eight.

Gabrielle Smith led UPJ (10-16, 7-14) with 22 points.

Softball

The Rock wound up 3-2 at the Snowbird Freeze Out Tournament in Myrtle Beach, losing a 2-1 decision to New Haven on Sunday. Brooke Dawson took the loss on the mound despite striking out six.

SRU split a pair of games Saturday, losing 5-0 to Wilmington and defeating Felician 11-3. Kailey Myers had four hits and five RBI on the day. Andria Copelli earned her first win on the mound.
