McKean Street is a place to highlight

A Taste of McKean is the rare event in Butler that takes place on a street other than Main Street.

While the street runs parallel to the main hub of activity in the city, it can be overlooked.

But that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be a place to notice. The street has many large and storied houses, some of which date back to the early 20th century. Those houses are where much of the action for Taste took place this year and last.

While the event is organized by the Butler Cultural District — an initiative that aims to highlight the culture of the city — the people of McKean Street help make it happen. Some porches housed bands and musicians while others had food and magicians out front. Some of the businesses that populate the street also contributed to the street fair.

The Butler Area Public Library and the Maridon Museum are two points of interest on McKean Street. They bring people to the road other than passersby.

What’s the use of people passing by a mostly residential area? Well, that’s up to the beholder. Some people may not know of the storied history of the street, which in the 1900s hosted many other businesses that led people their. After all, the road less traveled can be just as rewarding, so take McKean Street to other parts of the city if you haven’t already.
