Xavier Bartoe records hat trick as Karns City soccer teams sweep Punxsutawney: Roundup
Karns City girls soccer thumped Punxsutawney 5-1 Wednesday night on the road thanks to a pair of goals apiece from Katelyn VanDyke and Phoebe Brandon. It was the first half of a doubleheader sweep with the boys.
Bree O’Donnell had the final goal, and Carleigh Lucas finished with two assists.
Freeport 0, Burrell 0 — Sophia Crawford earned the shutout in goal for the Yellowjackets (7-1-1, 4-0-1) in a battle of the top two teams in WPIAL Section 2-2A. Burrell tops the table at 8-0-4, 4-0-2.
Mars 3, Hampton 1 — HB Wolski, Mackenzie Powell and Jade Breese all scored to lead the Planets (6-1-1, 3-1-1 section) to a win. Carly McKenna, Miley Gratton and Reese Vuckovich recorded one assist each.
Brock Dittman came up big with 10 saves in Karns City’s 4-2 win over Punxsutawney. Xavier Bartoe tallied a hat trick for the Gremlins, and Logan Rumbaugh had a goal and assist. Trevor Rumbaugh recorded two dimes.
Mars swept New Castle thanks to 13 aces from Natalie Janusz and five kills and seven aces from Reese Connelly. The Planets had 30 aces, 10 more than the number of kills, in the WPIAL Section 3-5A matchup.
North Allegheny 3, Seneca Valley 1 — No stats were provided from this game.
One Butler County-area athlete is heading to Thursday’s WPIAL Girls Tennis Singles Championships medal rounds. On Wednesday, North Catholic’s Evelyn Marche advanced as the No. 4 seed in the Class 2A field into the semifinals before losing to top seed Avery Allan of Quaker Valley in straight sets. Marche will play for third and the last spot in the PIAA tournament against Winchester Thurston’s Veronica Zinski, the second seed in the field. The match begins at 1 p.m. at Bethel Park High School.
Marche’s teammate, Macaria Stall, won in the first round before losing to Allan. And in 3A, Mars’ Gianna Kampian, the lone local in the bracket, lost as the 11th seed to No. 6 Carlin Bukovac of Greater Latrobe.
Karns City’s Liam Hobaugh finished second in the KSAC Championship with a round of 76 at Bavarian Hills Golf Course. Keystone’s Greyson Heath won by a stroke. A-C Valley/Union’s Joe Rapp shot a 79 for fourth, and teammate Koen Strauser carded an 83 to round out the locals in the top 10.
Keystone won the team championship in a field of four with a cumulative 327. A-C Valley finished third with a 362, and Moniteau was fourth (366), led by Isaac Book’s 86.
Avonworth 187, Butler 189 — Despite identical scores from each team’s top three golfers, Avonworth’s depth proved just enough of a difference to beat the Golden Tornado (10-6, 5-5 section) in their regular season finale at Slippery Rock Golf Club. Levi McClellan and Karsten Lenyk led Butler with 36s, and Eli Snyder carded a 37.
Moniteau swept Franklin in a dual-meet. Peyton Beck won the boys race in 18:31, and Alexis Kirschner finished second in the girls race in 22:33. No team scores were provided.
