Scalamogna

Maria Teresa Scalamogna, 92, of Carrick, passed away Monday afternoon, Sept. 14, 2026, at Ridgecrest at Cranberry Woods, in Cranberry Township.

Born in Maierato, Italy, on Oct. 4, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Nicola and Rosa (Serrao) Greco.

Known as Teresa to her closest friends, she met the love of her life, Francesco, through her sister, Palma, who arranged a meeting between them at the old water fountain, Funtana di Scrisi. Francesco promised he would carry the water back for her if she would talk to him. They were married Sept. 9, 1952, in a civil ceremony in Maierato. Francesco then left for the United States and sent for her two years later. Upon her arrival, they were married in a church in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Teresa was a fantastic cook and baker who, at the age of 89, single-handedly baked 108 dozen cookies of varying Italian types and introduced the concept of the “cookie table” to the state of Ohio at her granddaughter, Angela’s, wedding. Family was most important in her life.

She was also an avid seamstress, crocheter, knitter, gardener and a devote Catholic. She was a member of Holy Apostles Parish at St. Basil Catholic Church, in Carrick.

She was the beloved momma of Joseph Scalamogna and his wife, Linda (Faller), of Seven Fields, and Nicola Scalamogna and his wife, Lee (Kowalski), of Tampa, Fla.; Nonna and Grandma of Angela (Scott), Vincent, Anthony, Anna and Aliya (Michael); dear sister of Palma Barbieri (the late Giuseppe) and Rosa Monteleone (the late Clemente), both of Maierato, Italy, and a sister-in-law, Elisabetta Greco (the late Francesco), of Pittsburgh.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francesco A. Scalamogna, who died June 10, 2019; by her brothers, Francesco and Dominic (the late Elisabetta) Greco; sisters-in-law, Nancy Defina (the late Nazzareno) and Grace Scalamogna (the late Guiseppe); and brother-in-law, Paul (surviving spouse, Linda Smith), all of Pittsburgh.

She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Elisabetta Didiano (the late Domenico); brother-in-law, Domenic Scalamogna (the late Christine); and cousins in Canada, Argentina and Maierato, Italy.

The family is most grateful to the wonderful staff at Ridgecrest at Cranberry Woods, who returned a smile to her face in her last weeks and for the compassionate care from the staff of Bridges Hospice.

SCALAMOGNA — Friends of Maria Teresa Scalamogna, who died Monday, Sept. 14, 2026, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at MCDONALD-AEBERLI FUNERAL HOME, 238 Crowe Ave., Mars.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, at St. Mark the Evangelist Parish at St. Kilian Church, 7076 Franklin Road, Cranberry Township. Please meet at the church.

Entombment will be in the mausoleum at Calvary Cemetery, Pittsburgh.
