The emergency response workers at Butler Ambulance Service Saturday, Sept. 5, didn’t have any qualms about working over Labor Day weekend and that’s a good attitude to hold on to.

It’s obviously not ideal to work on a holiday created to recognize working people that most have off.

The EMTs, however, said the calls could get “interesting” over the holiday weekend, which many people would say is preferable to boring.

Describing things as “interesting” instead of using a more weighted term, such as good or bad, can really change your perspective. Working on Labor Day isn’t necessarily a bad thing — it’s interesting.

Maybe there’s less staff for the day and you have to pick up some extra tasks; or, in the case of the EMTs, maybe you have to respond to picnics or events for a unique emergency.

Neither are necessarily negative experiences, they’re interesting.

If you find ways to enjoy going to work on Labor Day, or any other holiday, that’s an interesting perspective. It provides an attitude that could rub off on your colleagues and change their thinking about being in the office instead of somewhere else.

The people working might have an opportunity to boast about their Labor Day exploits those at home may not. In doing so, you may get an interesting story from the shift to bring up in conversation.

The EMTs on the Labor Day weekend shift certainly had memories from their working holidays and that’s pretty interesting.
