Freeport, Union/A-C Valley win openers as new-look offenses impress: Week 1 football highlights

Danny King threw one touchdown pass and set up another with a pass as Freeport won its football season opener 22-0 Friday night at Indiana.

The host Little Indians could do little against the Yellowjacket defense.

Freeport blocked a punt to set up a short touchdown run by Braydon Pomaybo, concluding the scoring.

Indiana’s defense did stop a couple of Yellowjacket scoring threats inside the 10 during the course of the evening.

Union/A-C Valley 27, Brookville 7 — Parker Bish’s debut as starting running back went off without a hitch. The junior ran for 129 yards on 13 carries, caught four passes for 70 yards and scored two key touchdowns to lead Union/A-C Valley to a season-opening win.

Friday’s debut was also the Falcon Knights’ return to A-C Valley High School’s field for the first time since 2021.

Bish scored on a 7-yard pass in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 7-6, then added a 57-yard run in the third that extended U/ACV’s lead to 21-7.

Sophomore quarterback Andrew Kifer threw three touchdowns passes, two to Nick Ielase, and finished the night 12 of 26 for 177 yards.

Ielase also had six tackles and forced a fumble his brother, Ike, recovered, and Bish had seven tackles. Noah Yori led the defense with 17 takedowns.

Wilmington 55, Slippery Rock 13 — The Rockets held a 13-7 halftime lead in head coach Steve Monteleone’s debut, but turnovers and the defense allowing several big plays proved the difference in the second half.

Seton LaSalle 48, North Catholic 32 — The Trojans’ offense proved it was potent with several replacements at quarterback, running back and receiver, but Seton LaSalle overpowered NC’s defense in this one.

The Rebel victory avenged a 47-14 loss to the Trojans in last year’s season opener.
