Wow, Butler. You are sure keeping busy this summer!

I’ve been thoroughly impressed with the community-led events this year — the ones that benefit a certain cause, and even those done “for the heck of it.”

All of these new events popping up reminds me of being a kid, having nothing to do and having to “make your own fun.” Whether that was by running through a sprinkler, a lemonade stand, yard sale or making up an outdoor game with the neighborhood gang.

There’s a misconception that we lose our childhood wonder as we grow up. While it is true some people do, I think those who plan all of the events around here still have it. They’re creating fun opportunities for us, and for the benefit of others.

And you know what? We should commend them for it. Could you imagine turning down a walk under the neighbor’s sprinkler on a hot day, or not having a sip of lemonade? In the same way, we shouldn’t turn down an opportunity to enjoy our summer freedom.

You don’t have to “make your own fun” like you did in your childhood — the folks of Butler have made it for you!

So get out there and see what the neighborhood has to offer this weekend.

Divine Grace Parish’s Family Festival is a three-day event open to everyone from 4 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Ferdinand Church, 2535 Rochester Road, Cranberry Township. Zelienople’s Creative Crawl is an exploration of creative studio spaces on the borough’s Main Street. Do four hands-on projects for the ticket price of $225. The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Purchase tickets at zeliecreativecrawl.com/events/zelienople-creative-crawl.

Rock out to “Two Gentlemen of Verona (PA),” a fun take on Shakespeare in the Park running at 6:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Bring your own chair to Preston Park, 415 N. Eberhart Road in Butler Township, to take part in this long-standing theater tradition. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at hobnobtheatre.com.

The Shindig Charity Music Festival is for those who want to rock to the ’80s and ’90s hits all weekend long in Zelienople Park, 402 E. Beaver St. in Zelienople. Starting at 4:30 p.m. Friday, the festival lasts, which continues through Sunday, boasts live music, food, drinks, a car cruise and more. Tickets cost $23 for those over 16, everyone else gets in free, when accompanied by an adult. See the lineup and ticket information on theshindigmusicfestival.com.

Laugh and play along at the First Fridays Improv in hobnob’s studio, 134 S. Main St., starting at 7:30 Friday. Tickets are $5 to watch or play. Visit hobnobtheatre.com for details.

Glade Run’s Family Food Truck Festival and Touch-A-Truck event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on the campus, 30 Glade Run Drive in Zelienople. Sunnyview Nursing Home and Rodfather’s Car Cruise lasts from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at 107 Sunnyview Circle in Butler Township. Park any car, with no sign needed, or come to look around and have a bite to eat. Visit experiencebutler.com for details.

Music for the Cure is a place to groove and connect for a greater purpose. Bop on down to Blueberry Hill, 124 Maple Road, Karns City, from noon to 11:30 p.m. Saturday for a lineup of live music, food and fun. Parking is free. Please bring your own blanket or chair, and leave your pets at home. Tickets are $25 at eventbrite.com.

Halloween has come early at EDCO Pool in Evans City, 154 W. Main Street, for the Haunted Waters Late Night Swim from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Swim with the glowing lights, creepy pool floaties and themed games. Members enter for $3 and nonmembers for $6. No outside food or drink is permitted. Visit edcopark.com for details.

Do you like the music from “Spider Man,” “Star Wars,” “Pirates of the Caribbean” and other films? Butler County Symphony Orchestra will be performing “At the Movies” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in North Catholic High School, 1617 Pennsylvania 228 in Cranberry Township. It’s Farm Show season! Head down to the Butler Farm Show grounds, 625 Evans City Road in Connoquenessing Township, between Monday, Aug. 10, and Saturday, Aug. 15, for some old fashioned family fun in the form of games, rides, animal and art exhibits, tractor pulls, and derbies.
