Mural painter Mike Rehm leaves artistic legacy, but also a friendly one
Mike Rehm’s legacy is as visible in the work he left as it is in the memory of everyone he knew in his life.
Michael Robert Rehm, 61, of Butler, died Thursday, July 16. He was known for his artistry, having been a longtime member of the arts community and the Associated Artists of Butler County.
He is also known for his work, which is publicly displayed around Butler and the surrounding area. One of his murals greets people as they enter the children’s section of the Butler Area Public Library — immersing people in an oceanic environment complete with a watery backdrop and sea creatures.
Lori Hinderliter, executive director of the Butler Area Public Library, said the mural predates her tenure there but it is still enjoyed by the children who enter the area today.
Paul Scanlon, of the Associated Artists of Butler County, said Rehm had been involved in the group since the 1990s, but was a humble person who didn’t seek out the limelight. He helped build the children’s area in the Butler Art Center & Gallery and the kitchen area.
He was “always willing to help on an exhibit or a member,” Scanlon said. “Always good at working with kids and teens, comic book/graphic novel drawing, took them under their wing, built their confidence and helps them improve.”
Scanlon added Rehm was clever and funny, but also helpful to the people who needed it. He said Rehm followed in his father’s footsteps and was generous, energetic and a “big-hearted guy with a great sense of humor.”
Rehm was also one to put effort into maintaining his friendship with Scanlon, according to Scanlon.
“I think the fact he always maintained his friendship, then he would always call or text and ask to have a beer and meet up again,” Scanlon said. “Always kept us together and have a little fun.”
