A man whose body was found in a trash can in a Butler apartment in June died from combined drug poisoning, according to the Butler County Coroner’s Office.

Philip Schiedel died of a combination of cocaine and buprenorphine, a medication that treats opioid use disorder. The manner of death was accidental, the coroner’s office said.

Schiedel was found June 29 inside a trash can in an apartment at 224 N. Main St. Butler. Police said he was put there by Cavell Watkins, 64, of Butler, who was charged with felony controlled substance delivery and misdemeanor abuse of a corpse.

The trash can used to store Schiedel’s body was stolen June 24, according to Steve Goslaw, the owner of Robert Stephens Custom Jewelers, who previously had the Vogel Disposal trash can.

The cause of death finding aligns with what Watkins told police — he and a woman left the apartment for about 40 minutes and came back to find Schiedel unresponsive.

Watkins told police he covered Schiedel’s body with a sheet, but due to the smell, he took a trash can from a building on East New Castle Street and folded Schiedel inside. Watkins told police he had no further plans regarding what to do with the body and said his actions stemmed from fear regarding Schiedel’s death.

Watkins’ formal arraignment is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sept. 1 in Butler County Common Pleas Court. He remains in Butler County Prison on $25,000 bail.
