As the country nears celebrating its historic 250th birthday on July 4, Butler County Emergency Services is reminding residents not to clog the emergency phone lines by calling to report the presence of the much-anticipated fireworks displays.

“Every year, 911 centers are flooded with non-emergency calls about fireworks,” the department wrote in a social media post Thursday. “Every second a dispatcher spends answering a non-emergency question is a second someone experiencing a heart attack, a car crash or a house fire may experience a delay in getting the help they need.”

The department advises residents of Butler County to avoid calling 911 to ask about firework displays or other community events, or to report hearing fireworks. Noise disturbances can be reported through other means, such as non-emergency police lines.

However, calling 911 is advised if someone nearby is injured by a firework.
