Sometimes, even in these divisive political times, there is a decision made by our elected officials that everyone can praise.

That was the case last week when the Butler County Commissioners approved sprucing up the Alameda Waterpark slide.

The commissioners awarded a nearly $45,000 contract to have the slide restored with rust repair and repainting.

The work was not expected to interfere with the June 6 opening of the waterpark’s pool and is projected to be completed in two weeks.

The commissioners’ action is indicative of local government working to make residents’ lives better.

The Alameda Waterpark, for instance, gives families a place to relax and cool off during the heat of summer. It’s more than just a pool. The waterpark also contains a splash pad, diving well, picnic tables and umbrellas. It is a great getaway for families looking for a day trip, outdoor activities and an outing that won’t break the household budget.

What’s more, the waterpark is just one feature of the 400-acre park that includes picnic pavilions, bicycle trails and plenty of greenspace to walk through and enjoy.

The whole facility is run by the Butler County Parks and Recreation Department whose staff also deserves praise for keeping the park clean and safe and continuously updating its attractions.

In addition, the department puts on a host of summer activities ranging from swim lessons to night disc golf events to Shakespeare in the (Preston) Park.

Everyone can get behind a summer event in the park.
