Emergency services from three counties responded to a fire in the walls and attic of an apartment above a funeral home in Zelienople on Saturday night, June 6.

The fire was reported at 11:06 p.m. above Boylan-Glenn-Kildoo Funeral home at 219 E. Grandview Ave., according to Butler County Emergency Services dispatch.

Arriving crews from Harmony Fire District found smoke in the attic and fire in the surrounding walls, which is when a second alarm was called, according to a Facebook post from Harmony Fire District.

The fire was under control in about 35 minutes. Crews had to break into the walls and ceiling to get to it. They were on the scene for just over two hours.

No one was in the apartment when the fire broke out. Electric service to the funeral home was shut off until Monday, but its overall operation was not affected by the fire.

Low staffing among crews led firefighters from different stations to work together to get water to the third floor, according to a Facebook post from Callery Volunteer Fire Company.

Responding fire services included SAFER Group companies Harmony, Adams Area and Butler Township Volunteer fire districts; Cranberry Township and Callery volunteer fire companies; and Portersville-Muddy Creek Township, Middlesex Township and Prospect volunteer fire departments.

New Sewickley Fire District, Ellwood City Fire Department and Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department in Beaver County; and Wurtemburg-Perry Volunteer Fire Department in Lawrence County also responded.
