West Sunbury mayor, SRU police officer charged with DUI
The mayor of West Sunbury, who is also a Slippery Rock University police officer, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol Wednesday, June 3.
State police charged Edwin L. Young Jr., 23, of West Sunbury, Wednesday with two misdemeanor DUI counts following a May 18 single-vehicle crash in Clay Township.
Police said Young notified authorities that he rolled his Ram 1500 into a tree off Halston Road but did not wait at the scene until police arrived. Police found an opened Budweiser beer inside the vehicle.
Police then found Young at his home in West Sunbury. Police said he had a blood alcohol content of 0.138%. The legal limit in Pennsylvania is 0.08%.
Young is listed as a patrol officer on the SRU police staff webpage.
“Slippery Rock University is aware of the charges filed against a member of our University Police Department,” said Ken Bach, the university’s senior director of marketing and communication. “The university is cooperating fully with the appropriate authorities and is following all applicable policies and procedures.”
“The safety and well-being of our campus remain our highest priority,” he said.
Attempts to reach Young and West Sunbury Borough Council President Joy Berteotti were unsuccessful.
Young’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:20 a.m. June 30 before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.
