Pennsylvania American Water proposes upgrades to Butler Township treatment plant
BUTLER TWP — Pennsylvania American Water’s proposed improvement project for the main treatment plant on Litman Road was recommended for approval during a township planning commission meeting Tuesday, June 2.
Pennsylvania American is looking to construct a new two-story building that would use electric ultraviolet technology to disinfect central Butler County water as well as a new variation tank to meet environmental compliance regulations, zoning officer Jesse Hines said. The project is estimated to cost a little over $5 million to complete.
The update would remove two tanks and eliminate the use of chlorine for disinfection, which currently poses a safety risk to employees.
Pennsylvania American bought Butler Area Sewer Authority in October 2024 and has been upgrading equipment, such as replacing eight water mains in the township and the City of Butler, and improving safety procedures.
If passed by the Butler Township commissioners later this month, the company hopes to start construction this year.
The next board of commissioners meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. June 15. The next planning commission meeting is 6 p.m. July 7.
